Every great series has a moment where everything clicks. Lei Blooms was that moment.
Inspired by the muʻumuʻu, Hawaii's most beloved garment. This piece launches a new chapter in my art: the muʻumuʻu series. Where the aloha shirt gave me a canvas to work with, the muʻumuʻu gives me more fabric. More space. More room to let the flowers breathe and the vision run wild.
My love for the muʻumuʻu runs deep. Vintage muʻumuʻus stop me in my tracks. The colors, the patterns, the way they carry so much history and femininity and pure Hawaiian joy all at once. And nothing brings that feeling to life quite like Merrie Monarch. Once a year, Hilo becomes the center of the Hawaiian universe, and watching the fashion that walks out of that festival is nothing short of jaw-dropping. The craftsmanship, the intention, the beauty. It never gets old. That energy lives in every piece of this series.
Lei Blooms began with a lei specifically, the lei from "The Graduate", from my Aloha Shirt series. I took it apart. Deconstructed it completely and reimagined it as something new, arranging the blooms into a pattern that moves across the muʻumuʻu like the ocean itself.
Because that's exactly what this piece is about — the ocean.
The white hibiscus scattered throughout the design represents the whitewash, that burst of white foam when a wave finally breaks. The vibrant blooms and layered patterns capture the life and color of the land. And the blues, light and deep, shifting and layered are the ocean in all its moods. The shallow turquoise near shore. The deep navy where the water gets serious. Together they tell the story of Hawaii's coastline.
This is not a repeating pattern. Every bloom was placed by hand. A muʻumuʻu that exists only as art, but wears its inspiration proudly.
