Lavender Fields Forever
Some shirts tell a story. This one tells several.
Lavender Fields Forever is part of my ongoing aloha shirt art series. A body of work that reimagines what Hawaii's most iconic garment could look like if every single bloom were placed by hand, every leaf chosen with intention, and every pattern drawn not from a repeating tile but from memory, place, and love.
The vision for this piece was simple and clear from the start: lavender and green. Soft and bold together. Delicate and striking. A color story I'd been falling in love with across other work and knew immediately belonged on a shirt.
The naupaka came from two places close to my heart, my parents yard and the shores of Castles, one of my all-time favorite surf spots on the east side. Small, fun, uncrowded or at least it used to be. I grew up going there, and something about gathering flowers from that beach and bringing them into the studio felt exactly right for this piece. The orchids came from a local nursery, bold, the perfect counterpoint to naupakas delicateness.
Together they became something I've always been drawn to, a pattern inspired by the geometry and symmetry of Hawaiian quilts, but simplified, distilled, made to move the way a good aloha shirt should. Naupaka flowers, seeds, and leaves in varying sizes are arranged across the white shirt in a way that feels both structured and organic alongside bold yet delicate orchids. The lavender background holds it all in that soft, dreamy light.
This is not a repeating pattern generated by a computer. Every element was hand-placed, hand arranged, and photographed. A shirt that exists only as art, designed the way I wish more shirts were made.
